Ten units on a westbound BNSF mixed freight preparing to depart the Great Falls yard on Sunday morning, February 24, 2008. Must be a motive power transfer as this train didn't need all those horses or the tractive effort of all those engines - though all ten were under power.

The units in this lash-up are:
BNSF GP38-2 2290 (ex-BN 2290, nee-Frisco 435)
BNSF GP39E 2940 (ex-BN 2940, nee-CB&Q GP35 983)
BNSF GP38-2 2367 (ex-BN 2367, nee-Frisco 697)
BNSF GP38-2 2371 (ex-BN 2150)
BNSF SD40-2 6951 (ex-Santa Fe 5207)
BNSF SD40-2 8024 (ex-BN 8024)
FURX SD40-2 7933 (ex-BNSF 7933, nee-BN 7933)
BNSF SD40-2 8062 (ex-BN 8062)
BNSF ES44DC 7776
BNSF GP39E 2767 (ex-NS GP30 2636, nee-Southern GP30 2636)

Well...as the saying goes..."If you got it use it'....flaunt it...and what the hell...made for a great shot for you...so that must of been why they had um all fired up!

That HP must be enough to go to outer space. Well, nearly :D

What strikes me as most odd is the ES44DC. Everything else about the consist looks like a reshuffling of older units, but this doesn't really fit in there. And if it was part of the normally scheduled power for the train, what's it doing in the back instead of in front? Shouldn't it be more comfortable for the engineer?

Holy cow, talk about power.
Nice shot!

They may have had no way to turn it around. So if that is the case, it really doesn't matter.

I figure it's just going to be dropped off in Shelby on the Hi-Line and then head east or west from there. This train itself is ultimately bound for the Canadian Pacific interchange up at Sweetgrass, MT on the Canadian border.

There's a wye where they can turn units around. I figure it's just being dropped off on Shelby for use on the Hi-Line, possibly in helper service heading west toward the mountains.
