While I was photographing the female cooling off in the shade I caught a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye. Around the side of the large rock and half way up a tiny head poked out as a young marmot, probably born earlier this spring, took a look around at the wider world.

Our marmots are the "Yellow-bellied Marmot", also known as Rockchucks. They are very closely related to the Woodchucks or Groundhogs of Eastern North America.

marmots are sweet :D i have only ever seen one once, whilst on a field trip in the french alps, he came and watched us and ate the bread crusts we threw him :D
